For many years the only way to clean a modern oven was with a strong cleaning product, and a lot of hard work. When pyrolytic cleaning was then introduced, the oven did most of the work by burning off any residue. This is achieved through reaching extremely high temperatures and making it easy to wipe out the resulting ash.

This technology is now widespread across manufacturers, but De Dietrich has the largest selection available anywhere. The choice includes not only built in ovens but also freestanding cookers and range cookers.

Braeg Heneffe, general manager at Internet Kitchen Appliances who retail De Dietrich ovens, comments on the apparent lack of knowledge of this cooking feature: "Most of our customers will not have heard about the Pyroclean feature that De Dietrich offers. The main reason is that you replace an oven on average about every 10 years, and 10 years ago they were very few ovens with this technology."

He went on to add: "When you start to look for a new model oven, there are some great products around and we do very well with the so called 'self cleaning oven'. It costs less to run the cleaning cycle than it does to buy the oven cleaner."
